The relationship between axiomatic design and optimization design was analyzed and an optimization method based on axiomatic design was developed. The contribution of design variable to design objectives was determined by using the orthogonal experiment and variance analysis. The design variables were classified into groups and the number of groups was the same as that of the design objectives in order to make the design similar to the uncoupled or decoupled optimization design, which avoided the trade-off between design objectives. The method proved effective through an optimization example of a disk brake.
